At Blizzard Q2 conference call Blizzard developers answered about Starcraft 2 & A about SC2 LAN. Over 100.000 people has signed petition to get LAN back for starcraft 2. Read what Blizzard developers answers regards LAN.

How does LAN impact Starcraft 2?

LAN has been a significant part of the world of gaming for tournaments, LAN parties, and more. With original Starcraft you could install spawns on multiple computers and have everyone play on LAN using only 1 copy of the game. So with the announced of no LAN in Starcraft 2 it’s no wonder gamers are upset.

Rob Pardo:
It’s not like we’re surprised that there’s a petition about LAN in Starcraft 2. It was a very, very tough decision. We’ve been talking about it back and forth for well over a year before we finally decided that this is more of the direction of the future for us and actually for the industry. I think LAN will always be a footnote in our history, just like DOS was.

So why drop LAN support?

Rob and Dustin made it very clear that while dropping LAN contributes to getting rid of piracy, it’s not a major factory into the decision to drop it. Their primary motivating factor is the level of interaction that now exists between single player and Battle.net with achievements and other unannounced features.

When you think back to original Starcraft and how clear cut it was, with Battle.net serving as simply a match making system. Now you have Battle.net serving as much more than just a match making system, but a social networking platform and who knows what else Blizzard has done that’s unannounced as of yet.

How will no LAN effect tournaments and other events that rely on it?

With LAN not being included it raises the question of what will Blizzard do with tournaments and other eSports events where latency is unacceptable. Dustin Browder has said previously that major improvements have been made to the Battle.net infrastructure which will significantly improve latency issues.

Dustin Browder:
We’re going to do everything we can to support real, legitimate LAN users like eSports and the tournament community. We’re going to try really hard to look into ways to have Battle.net work really well that previously really needed LAN play.

With all the information Blizzard Entertainment provided about Starcraft 2 Lan, what is your standpoint on this? should they allow LAN for starcraft II?
