  1. (Fixed for Typo)

Diablo 3 is the third sequel to the popular game series “Diablo”, as it was announced on June 28th, 2008 at the Blizzard Entertainment Worldwide Invitational in Paris, France with no available or even rumored released date, how it is being planned for a release on both the Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. As its predecessors, the game is going to take place in the fictional dark fantasy world known as the Sanctuary. The new game setting will give players the chance to fight off the cynical forces that threaten the very world of Sanctuary and visit many familiar locations such as Tristram. The game will feature Havok physics, support for DirectX 10 and 9 so that it may be available to run on a variety of systems. It’s also predicted that the game will be using Blizzard’s new Battle.net service, with its many features; such as the ability to go in and out of a co-operative game with other players.
As of now, the game currently has 3 classes that have been unveiled out of 5 and those classes would be the Barbarian, Witch Doctor, Wizard, and the Archivist class which does not count due to just being a mere April Fool’s joke. Since then development started has in 2005 at Blizzard North (no longer in operation), with many revisions before being announced and demoed, and since then it has been undergoing development at Blizzard’s Irvine campus with a development team at the size of fifty people. As very few have, I played Diablo 3 at Blizzcon 2008 for a mere 10 minute and left with an amazing first impression of the game, and I cannot wait to see the final product and spend hours on end enjoying this soon to be masterpiece.

  2. The Trouble With Being a Diablo Hero.

Blood Raven, The Summoner, and The Dark Wanderer when these names are said what comes to mind? Evil bosses for most of you…but there is more to these figures than that. They all once fought to free the town of Tristram from the grip of Diablo. It is true that pride comes before the fall and as such a fate the warrior now know as The Dark Wanders did have. On a side note jamming a giant soulstone of evil into you head is probably never a good idea, yet I will digress from that. What can be said of the rouge Blood Raven or the sorcerer know only as The Summoner? Each of these hero fought bravely for the town yet they all where corrupted.
Now flash forward twenties years down the line and witness the fall of more heroes. Those whom worked together to fell The three Brothers and the fallen heroes of Tristram have turned to darkness them selves. This sets a very disturbing trend. If the fate of any would be hero is to become the evil they had hoped to destroy, how many more will answer the call? I this a cosmic balancing act must there always be an evil? Or is fat just playing a cruel joke on those who would be kings or Queens of men.

  3. My Kingdom for an Ear!

November 30th, 1996: a day that will live in the annals of history. A day that changed the hack ‘n slash forever. Hell, it was a day that redefined HELL fer chrissake. It was the day Diablo launched in North America.

I remember the glory days of my gaming youth, the rush of this newfangled “online simultaneous gameplay” where you could hook up and play video games with random strangers. Goldeneye was the king of multiplayer mayhem back then, but that all changed the day I discovered Diablo.

My first online game. They say you always remember your first.

Something about Blizzard’s subtle sense of humor has always resonated with me; I like the funny names and nudge-nudge wink-wink references to pop culture as much as the next guy, but my favorite gag was always the Ear. You know what I’m talking about; you square up with some other schmoe on a Diablo server and win a duel (back before everyone was running around with dual Grandfathers, Zodiac rings and Godly Plates of the Whale with god-mode set to a hotkey), and suddenly you’re the proud owner of another player’s Ear. His Ear?! Ha, I have his Ear! What do I do with an Ear? Well, it makes a funny little squishing sound when I drop it. And how humiliating is it to know that somebody is running around with a part of your body they managed to cut off? Well played, Blizzard. Well played indeed.

In the original Diablo, players were ruthless. There weren’t any carebear mutually agreed anti-player-killing fail-safes in place. You could simply tell the guy who just loaded into your game, “Hey, I’m down on the fifteenth level, let me send you a TP!” and as soon as the hapless would-be hero comes bounding through, viola, another Ear to add to your collection! Sometimes players would even hire other players as bounty hunters, placing large sums of gold for the Ear of another player who wronged them. How cool was that? The community aspect and freedom allowed in the original Diablo was second to none in its day.

But the whiney hunger of the masses would not be sated. Enough people got sick of being “PK’ed” by hackers that Blizzard decided to go a new direction with Diablo II; no longer an open sandbox without rules, the new and “improved” design removed the ability to attack at random and forced players to toggle a player-vs-player icon to allow competitive play. No more piles of player Ears to hoard. No more ganking unsuspecting allies. No more bounty hunters, PK’ing, or expecting the unexpected. You didn’t have the sense of “anything can happen” hanging over your head. I loved Diablo II, don’t get me wrong; I just miss the raw interactive aspect of the original. In a nutshell, I want a want a place to stash a whole hell of a lot of Ears in Diablo III, AND I don’t want to have to get a toggle button’s permission to do it.

So here’s my suggestion: in the exciting new realm of Battle.net 2.0, let the players decide what kind of experience they want to have. Whenever we host a new game in Diablo III, give us the option up front whether we want a game that allows open PKing or permission-only dueling. This decision, made by way of an option box before the game world loads, could be displayed on a summary screen whenever other people highlight your game from the list. That way they’d know what they were potentially getting into and make an informed decision on the experience they wanted to have.

Oh, one last thing. I’m putting a 10,000g bounty on the Ear of Mike Morhaime unless Diablo III gets LAN play back.

  4. Diablo 3 hellish creatures made with tender loving creativity
    ————————————–

Besides the fact that Blizzard has chosen to unfold the Diablo 3 world bestiary through the eyes of Abd al-Hazir, they have also managed to showcase some interesting creature designs.
Let’s start with the most recent entry to the bestiary- The Fallen Ones.

    * Taking a concept from the Starcraft universe’s Infested Terran and Baneling, Diablo 3 now has its own living bomb- the Lunatic! The creature’s design is simple (popping a balloon) and even comedic.
    * The other design that was interesting was the Overseer. Goatmen are not something new, but the weapon the Overseer uses was interesting. A club with two whole swords through it! Two swords with one hand? Clever.
    * Looking at the Dune Thresher these words cross my mind- big lizard, sand worm, crocodile. It looks like, with the Dune Thresher, Diablo 3 will introduce more hidden enemies in a different manner (not only undeads from sarcophagus).
    * And then there are the Gnarled Walkers. I think this was what the concept artist was told to make. A giant freaking tree, that moves! With corpses hanging from it! And dead souls in the trunk!

Let us see what other interesting concepts the Blizzard team comes up with next.

  5. “A gift for you…”

The most recognizable character of all time is the barbarian. He lusts for strength and vigorous weapons of destruction. His beloved home, Mount Arreat, taken by Tyrael after the hero’s slayed Baal, is returned to. (Though secretly pissed about returning to a dump) He roams the hillside of Mount Arreat as if nothing has happened, to protect the mysterious object he swore to.

One thing you will learn when you venture out into the world of Diablo is the sure iron will of the barbarian. He stops at nothing to protect what he promised. I believe this will translate into how the barbarian will be played in Diablo 3. He’ll have a sword or two (maybe three or four with alternate weapon wields) and will be ready to whirl wind into a storm of death, without a second thought. Howbeit, the barbarian will have to endure everything from giant head-ripping off monsters with lots of legs to the subtle zombie massacres in the depths of the Tristram Cathedral.

Anyway you can imagine the barbarian, you will come out with one common aspect: brute strength. Nevertheless, he’ll be the one upfront, fearless of all demons, upholding his oath to protect his mysterious object (wherever it may be.)

A New Era of Diablo Tactics
    By Roskvape

The original Diablo was the first game I played on a LAN. My favorite part of it was the sheer quantity of destruction one could dish out. Now that I understand game genres better, I realize that this is the brilliance of a hack-and-slash.

As I played similar games, like Revenant and Diablo II, and even Dungeon Siege, I understood the primary flaw in most games of this genre: mindless repetition. After hacking through eight hundred skeletons, one begins to get a little bored. The animations are fun, but you’ve seen them so many times! The enemies get harder, but it remains the same: point, click, repeat as fast as possible. Of course, special powers break it up and new enemies do, too, but if the destruction gets boring, the whole game is boring.

Now we have Diablo III. The most obvious improvement is of course, the graphics. It is beautifully rendered. If you’re like me, and tried to play Diablo II recently, you may have noticed just how old that game has become. Remember the 640 x 480 resolution? OMG! Maybe not as bad as the original Sim City, but still! I was a bit disappointed to see that the camera seems to be fixed, not able to be rotated around, but while you may not be able to rotate the camera, the environment is unmistakably three-dimensional. There are now demons crawling up out of the abyss and ladders to climb. I suspect the maps will not be randomized in this version, but who knows?

The best part of this is the wonderful animations Blizzard has done. The destruction isn’t just destruction, it is DESTRUCTION! Blood and guts and explosive fireballs make the slaughter all the more satisfying. This is the heart and soul of a hack-and-slash, and Diablo III nails it. The best class and skills (the Barbarian) were kept, and just watching the whirlwind is enough to make me love the game . . . but there’s more.

Once we get past the flash and shine of stunning graphics, we hit upon the important differences of Diablo III. No more will the mindless clicka-clicka-clicka of the mouse button go on with endless abandon. (And as a side note, the controls have been updated, allowing you to cycle skills with the mouse wheel or tab keys.) Yes, it is still a hack-and-slash . . . a rethinking of tactics will have to be done. Wait, did I say rethinking? I meant, Diablo players will actually have to use tactics for once! *queue the stunned gasp*

It’s true. Things have changed in the Diablo world. Actually, the world itself has changed. Aside from being three-dimensional, it is destructible. Oh, yes, and not just breakable barrels—you can tear down whole walls. Here is where we start to see tactics. You can use the environment against your enemy. Hmm, the possibilities. . . .

To add to this, all the mob types have their own unique behaviors and weaknesses. This means in order to fight effectively, you will have to, as they say, “know thy enemy.” This will help keep us on our toes, and when combined with new classes, leads to the possibility of all kinds of strategies. At the same time, the rampant hewing of mobs has become all the more satisfying, whether you strategize or not. Hard to lose either way!

The Diablo line has definitely become more interesting. This may be one hack-and-slash that never gets boring.

  7. Diablo III
Bloodthirsty Demons from Hell: Enemies or BFF?

As much as I enjoy bashing mindless brutes, I sometimes wonder how the game would change if the creatures and demons had more to them than just a primal bloodlust. Do creatures with personality and motivations change game play? What if some of them were cowardly or non-aggressive: would killing them reveal more about ourselves than we would like to know? I realize that this isn’t a head-fest and we can’t expect evil creatures to have studied under Lee Strasberg, but does giving them personality change the game or would that be just a novelty (or even an annoyance) to most players? Monsters in the game act more like Tor Johnson than John Malkovich: that is what we have come to expect, right?

Diablo 3, like many of the games today, allows players to create unique characters imbued with personality. Yet, for the most part the foes they fight lack the individualism and personality that player-characters have. In games like “The World of Warcraft” this dichotomy is alleviated because players are able to play both the “good” and “evil” sides in the game. Could such a format be in the future for the Diablo series? Or would doing so strip Diablo of the game’s legacy—turning it into nothing more than a darker version of it’s sister game?

Can we at least give the poor bastards some kind of tribal unity? Too many mob monsters act like zombies with no variation in their actions. If I kill a monster, the others attack with a robot-like sameness. Gameplay has not really changed that much from the 80’s and Berkeley Software’s “Robots”. Prettier pictures, faster action—but that’s it.

If I were a goatman and saw a buddy killed, I would be furious! Level me up a little when I am angry (you wouldn’t like me when I’m angry!) and make each goatman harder to kill as more join the fray. Then, when most of the demons are dead, have some of them run away (I want to LIVE!). While that isn’t exactly AI, at least variable actions would give them the illusion of life.

Don’t get me wrong: the monsters in Diablo are fantastic and creepy as hell (so to speak). Playing the game is like being transported into a Hellraiser film. The environment is immersive—a kind of lucid dream (or nightmare). In a sense the different types and classes of creatures do have their mannerisms. For a nightmare world, maybe a player doesn’t want the distraction of foes with character: I don’t think having the Thousand Pounder be a demon with low self-esteem and an eating disorder would give the game more depth. At a certain point you just need to know that something needs to be pounded.

Maybe that’s why we play this game.

  8. The witch doctor was believed to be only a legend but they are very much real. Their abilities are astonishing and incur fear in their enemies. These people come from the lower Teganze and frequently war with their neighboring tribes, the Clan of the Seven Stones and the Tribe of the Clouded Valley. This allows the victors to replenish their stores of material for human sacrifices. The witch doctors are finely attuned to the land and believe in a god that lives in The Unformed Land. Amazingly, they have a philosophy very much unlike our own, one of non-individuality and self-sacrifice.
His skills are distributed into 3 skill trees: plague, spirit and voodoo. Each tree has its own distinct advantages. The plague tree includes at the moment locust swarm, plague of toads, and spider statue. Locust swarm sends out a swarm of locusts that turns the recipient green and gives poison damage to all attacks by his mongrels. The plague of toads is likened to the charged bolt but with frogs instead of lightning. The toads leap out in front with a slight homing and explode causing poison damage while leaving acid puddles wherever they touch the ground. Spider statue is a trap type attack that causes spiders to attack nearby enemies. The spirit tree includes skull of flame, soul harvest, firebats, and mass confusion. The skull of flame is an explosive flammable skull that can be tossed. Soul harvest is a nova-type spell that causes minimal damage but adds to the witch doctor’s mana for each enemy killed. Firebats is exactly that, bats on fire. The bats are summoned and sent on fire as long as the witch doctor wishes. They scorch whatever is in range. Mass confusion causes confusion among the monsters. They may attack other monsters or be attacked by other monsters, but are not under the witch doctor’s control. Lastly, the voodoo tree includes horrify, wall of zombies, sacrifice, and summon mongrel. Horrify is a mask of terror that causes nearby enemies to flee in horror. The wall of zombies creates a wall of attacking zombies that claw at any nearby enemies. Sacrifice explodes the witch doctor’s minion(s) causing area damage. Summon mongrel summons a mongrel that takes up the element of the witch doctor’s offensive spells. So far, only 11 active skills have been seen but there is a very good chance that passive and mastery skills will follow.

  9. Sanctuary I think Not!!

Diablo III’s land of sanctuary is no peaceful setting filled with fluffy bunnies. Hell has broken loose and the devil and its minions are running rampant. It’s your calling to enter combat in an attempt to wrest control from the denizens of hell. Three paragons of heroism are currently available for your choosing. A muscle bound barbarian full of strength and wicked melee abilities, a magical wizard seething with the raw power of the ancient world, and a mystical witch doctor able to tap into untold dark earthly powers. Old heroes and friends, like wise old Deckard Cain, await bold adventures lending their assistance in reclaiming the world.
Blizzard developers, the lords behind the world of Sanctuary and the title Diablo, have only revealed the tip of the proverbial iceberg. Five playable heroes will be available, male and female character options, exciting new health mechanics which put an end to health pot chains, as well as a MEAN enemy AI. The soldiers of the abyss will employ new tactics like shielding their archers and crowd controlling the champions of good. Blizzard has created an immersive world that teams with the overflow of hell and, more importantly, the shiny wondrous loot the minions might be holding. With a brand new graphic engine Diablo III is promising to show mobs of monsters, interactive scenery, and unique graphics for spells and abilities all in eye popping 3d. An upgraded battle.net will allow for even better online and multiplayer excitement, allowing young heroes to team up with friends across the world to kick Big D’s butts back to hell. New co-op systems will do away with the loot race of who can pick up the fastest, with individual loot and certain pick ups to be beneficial for entire the party. This third installment promises to hold true to the Diablo legacy bringing to its fans epic cut scenes, a magnificently immersive story line, and endless hours of fun.

  10. Big D… Maybe?

One of the big questions for the upcoming Diablo game is “Who’s the next Big Evil Star?” Of course the obvious candidate is Big D himself (after all the game is named after him) but there are some doubts surrounding this. Lets take stock.

    1) During Diablo II the three Prime Evils (Diablo, Baal, Mephisto) were destroyed/banished/whatever happens when you shove a large chunk of metal repeatedly into the physical manifestations of Evil (and use fire/ice/lightn… okay I think I made my point).

    2) How sure are we that these evils were destroyed? Well Mephisto’s Soul stone is destroyed by smashing it with a giant hammer (we presume that this does not in fact release him, but instead due to the manner of destruction, obliterates his Prime Evil essence). Big D… there are some ways I can see to twist him not being “dead” “dead”, after all you never recovered a soul stone from him. Once you defeat Baal the arch-Angel Tyrael pops in. Presumably this isn’t possible if Baal is still alive, or if he was Tyrael would presumably finish him/point it out. So 2 of the 3 Prime evils are accounted for.

So then this leaves is with a possible return of Big D, but what are other possibilities?

    1) Someone set us up! The Bomb! – Tyrael: Okay, this one comes sorta out of left field but, there are some inconsistancys in his actions. Tyrael pops into the mortal realm to set up a hunt for the three Prime Evils, while at the same time providing humans the Soul Stones necessary to imprison the evils. One theme that seems to be prevalent is the corruption of those exposed to the influence of the Prime Evils. Mephisto corrupts the faithful Zakarum. Diablo corrupts those that came to defeat him (notably the rogues and the guy that shoved the soul stone into his head… I still don’t get where “shoving the giant shard of pure evil containing one of the top three most evil beings in EXISTANCE into your forehead” crossed his mind as a GOOD idea.) Following this thread it’s conceivable that Tyrial may have been corrupted, and either wanted to remove the three prime evils from his way or is working for someone else.

    2) Power behind the throne – Azmodan: One of the Evils under the Three (Not a Lesser or Prime evil – maybe a Mediocre Evil?). Also one of the prime movers and shakers involved in the Exiling of the Three. He is mentioned in the Bestiary entry for the Fallen as having ordered the Fallen to attack Diablo and co. in a bid to overthrow him. An obvious question to ponder is where was Azmodan when Big D returned home in act 4 (Hell) for Diablo II? One would think after more than 200 years he’d react adversely and probably violently to Diablo’s attempt to re-gain his throne. This alone could be debated for years. Was he preoccupied? Didn’t care? Had he struck a deal with the Three that nobody knows about? Does Diablo have something over him forcing him so he couldn’t move against Big D right away? Whatever the case is, he’s still at large and in theory as big a threat as Big D was. Add in the fact that the World Stone was busted and Sanctuary is no longer “protected” it’s quite plausible he’s setting up for one Hell of a rampage.

    3) Evil from beyond the Veil – “Unknown”: The mortal world was “discovered”, this implies that there is still things out there that are neither allied with or known by the Burning Hells or Vaulting Heavens. So our third candidate is an unknown force has come to stake a claim on Sanctuary. This one seems unlikely because presumably a 3rd power base would not use the demonic powers like the fallen, but something else more suited to “them”.

Overall there are a lot of questions and few answers, until we hear more or the game is finally released all we can do is eagerly await and ponder. So then reader, what say you? Is Big D back in da house? Or is some new demon Punk stepping up, just to get smacked right back down?

  11. Blizzard Entertainments Third Diablo Installment
    (By Gary Joe O’Neal)

A Journey through lands plagued by an unspeakable evil. A Barbarian, a Witch Doctor and a Wizard seek another pair of companions to aid them on this journey while Blizzard fans anticipate knowledge of these two unknown heroes. Even more anticipated is the adventure that awaits these fans. Legions of demons, specters, undead and other unnamed beasts, monsters, and atrocities are waiting to be slain. Treasures of weapons, armor, gold and more are waiting to be claimed by only the bravest and strongest of warriors. Numerous distinctive landscapes and dungeons packed with traps and challenges in a perilous world. This world of course exists in Diablo3, another PC game from Blizzard entertainment that will undoubtedly be regarded among the best.
In the world of Sanctuary a recurring nightmare returns as the burning hells rise once again to ravage the mortal world. Players will again combat this evil with a wide range of abilities and weapons. Each character class will greatly differ from one another, offering different play experiences; there will also be random environment layouts, scripted events and enemy encounters. Along with the game’s focus on online play, these features give the game a lot of playability.
There are many abilities that have been talked about, one of the three classes made public thus far, the Witch Doctor, is a caster and summoner. His skills include, skull of flame(fire bomb), locust swarm, horrify, mass confusion, wall of zombies, soul harvest, plague of toads, summon mongrel, and sacrifice. Mongrels can also be imbued with some of the Witch Doctor’s abilities, like lighting them on fire or swarming them with locust allowing them to do additional damage to enemies. The Barbarian’s skills, Cleave, Ground Stomp, leap attack, seismic slam, whirlwind, bash, slashing strike, and frenzy, are more up close and personal. And the Wizard, a pure caster, has skills like Disintegrate, electrocute, teleport, magic missile, slow time, charged bolt, spectral blade, meteor storm, and frost nova. The Wizard and Barbarian classes have a collection of passive skills as well. Aside from the examples I’ve given, there are many more skills for all the classes, most of which are yet to be revealed.
Diablo3 will have many differences from Diablo2. There will be two additional equipment slots, shoulder and leggings. Other new features include a new hotbar for using skills, health replenishing orbs that drop from enemies, and runes that can change or add to the effect of a skill. The potion belt is gone, and while potions may be in the game, they will not be relied on as much as they were in Diablo2. Inventory has changed as well, each item taking only a single slot.
Still, even with all of the current details, nothing is final until the game is released. It will surely be going through many changes and adjustments before then. And to be expected, Blizzard will as always do everything that is necessary to assure a quality product. Though Diablo3 has no release date yet, when it’s ready, it will be an epic experience in a dark and battle heavy saga.

  12. You may remember the game DIABLO or Diablo as some may call it as the game where you constantly make games called “BUTCHER Help plz.” Because you are level 5 and just can’t do it yourself for some unknown reason. Or you may remember the game DIABLO II as the game where you fight the prime evils, despite the fact Diablo isn’t the final boss. But now, the wait is over! DIABLO III is on the horizon! With tons of new features and enemies and classes and quests and other stuff you’re going to beg for help on! Unlike the first Diablo game it won’t just be a chatroom because this time there is a new and improved Battle.net, one that puts the word epic in battle.(I know the word epic isn’t really in battle.) Join Deckard Cain and all of your friends in this family adventure of the whatever time it releases!(Ignore the fact I said family I do realize the chaos there will be in this game.) So gear up, buy real life swords and armor, sit down in a computer chair and… wait for the game to come out. Then when I comes out, buy more armor, a better sword, and get ready for the battle of a lifetime! Also I would like to mention the Witch Doctors and Barbarians, first off the Witch Doctors are Shamans or something like that who use their magical powers to make you explode and turn you into a zombie or bug or a tree, I don’t know. And the Barbarians are noble warriors who act nothing like savage barbarians at all, other than the fact they slice people up, open, and in half, but other than that they are actually pretty swell guys. So buy a sword, armor, select a class, learn magical spells in real life, and get ready to Battle.net the prime evils once more in DIABLO III!

  13. Deckard Cain, the man who lives on forever, this man has been through it all, I mean really, he is the only character you see in EVERY game(Other than Diablo.) But on the topic of lore, and Deckard Cain, lets flash back to the very first game, Arch Bishop Lazarus.. what if he came back? That would be a crazy battle, because that guy was pretty major in the first game, which is incredibly old. I myself have been awaiting a return of The Butcher, that is probably the most fan favored character because of his famous words “Fresh Meat.” Imagine fighting The Butcher again, he would kill you every time, because of this you will never get past level 5. What about Wirt? He was killed by a bunch of walking cows saying “Moo.” Isn’t that just one Hell of a way to die. No I did not intend a pun there. But what does all this remind you of? That’s right! The fact that the man you play as in the first game, is Diablo in the second game, which raises the question of who will be Diablo in the third game? I know the answer do you? The answer is obvious, play the game when it comes out.

  14. I would like to discuss something that I’ve been thinking of for a while, maybe this will be revealed in Diablo III, well anyways, inside of WARCRAFT III they mention that maybe the demons of the Burning Legion come from Sanctuary, and there is an enemy in the game called The Butcher and an item called Wirt’s Other Leg and in World of Warcraft Wirt’s Third Leg, but more of a mystery is Kil’Jaeden’s looks, he looks like a demon all right, but like too much of a demon, it may be possible he is related to Diablo in someone as if he is his father or something like that, as if he himself is also from Sanctuary, don’t these just make you wonder? Maybe in DIABLO III you will get more hints and easter eggs throughout the game, or maybe you will find an answer, who knows? Could all Blizzard games be a universal link? Could Sanctuary, Azeroth, etc. all exist in the same universe? I know this question will not be answer in DIABLO III because of it is a Diablo game, not a universal adventure, but they still leave hints in all of their games, so I’ll leave the conclusion to you. Are the worlds linked?

  15. The History of Recent Events

In troubled times one must look back on the past to understand where to go in the future. The troubles that now burden the land began a little over three-hundred years ago, when the three Prime Evils where cast out from the Burning Hells by lesser demons. Diablo, Baal, and Mephisto ran about Sanctuary almost unopposed for around forty years.

Around 1004 the archangel Tyrael brought together a group of heroes to face the Prime Evils. This group was know as the Horadrim and where given the Soulstones in which to imprison the three evil brothers in. In a span of less than twenty years the Horadrim tracked down and imprisoned Mephisto, Baal, and Diablo. A Horadric monastery is built over Diablo’s Soulstone. The town of Tristram is unfortunately built around this monastery. The Horadrim with nothing left to do becomes no more. The descendent of leader of the group who captured Diablo Deckard Cain resurrects the Horadrim many years later.

Just under two-hundred and fifty years after his capture Diablo is freed from his prison by Archbishop Lazarus. Diablo than tries to posses King Leoric, he fails to do so but the Leoric is driven into insanity. Lazarus takes the King’s son to Diablo for possession. After this a lone warrior descends and defeats Diablo and his hoards. This hero attempts to contain Diablo by shoving the Soulstone into his own head.

Diablo soon begins to overwhelm the hero and sets off to free his brothers. At this time a group of heroes sets off to stop him they manage to kill Diablo but not before he frees both his brothers. Both Mephisto’s and Diablo’s Soulstones are shattered on the Hellforge in hopes of keeping them from resurrecting. The heroes fallow Baal to Arreat Summit and defeat him. Baal had by the time managed his goal of tainting the Worldstone of which little is know. Tyrael arrives and shatters the corrupted Worldstone uncertain what the consequences of this action might be.

That was twenty years ago which brings us to the current times. Many of the heroes that battled Baal have been drive to a path of darkness because of their conflict. The world is filled with creatures of cold intent. Even the last descendent of the Horadrim Deckard Cain is unsure what will come next. There is one thing for sure though the world is once again in need of heroes.

  16. Diablo 3 Skill Runes
    ————————-
Among the many new features of Diablo 3, one in particular has caught the eye of fans everywhere: Skill Runes. This new feature is one that hasn’t previously been explored in other Action RPGs of the past, but is a new concept which has the potential to drastically change the way that the game and future Action RPGs are played.

    What do they do?
    ————————-
Skill Runes are a new type of item drop that will be present in Diablo 3. Unlike the runes of the past which were used to build Runewords (basically glorified Uniques), these “Skill” Runes will be used solely to modify how a skill behaves. When a Skill Rune is placed in an active skill in the Skill Tree, a unique effect such as extra damage, extra attacks, increased duration, or other is applied.

For example, Hydra Rune (previously named Multistrike) increases a skills quantity. When placed in the Skull of Flame, the skill gains the ability to bounce multiple times; in Electrocute, more bounces; in Mirror Image, more images; and in Teleport, create a temporary illusion each time you cast.

Another type of rune, Force Rune (previously named Power Rune), will add burning patches of fire to Skull of Flame strikes, and more hit points and duration to Mirror Images. Yet another type, Striking Rune, will give Mirror Images the ability to deal damage, and add an area of effect attack to Teleport, turning it from a defensive skill into an offensive one.

    Rune types and qualities
    ————————-
So far there are five known types of Skill Runes: Hydra, Force, Viper, Striking, and Energy. These runes are not final and the total number included in the final product is subject to change. Currently the development team wants to keep the runes down a low number as they want each rune to have a diverse effect and be useful to all classes. Runes that are not unique or will only affect a few skills, will most likely not be implemented.

Skill runes have a variety of quality types (much like gems of Diablo 2) ranging from minor, major, and beyond. Jay Wilson has stated that there will be five or six different quality levels in total, with higher levels having greater effects. He also hinted at the possibility of extremely rare runes with “fantastic effects”. It is not known whether combining runes via recipe for an upgraded version like in Diablo 2 will be implemented at this time, but it is a definite possibility.

    Swappability
    ————————-
Skill Runes have been stated to be freely swappable, being able to be added and removed from skills without penalty. This is to encourage players try out different Skill Rune effects without worry. However, Diablo forum manager Bashiok, has stated that there might be some limitation or cost added to rune swapping later on. This is most likely in an effort to stop players from “juggling” their runes, changing them mid-fight to better suit their strategy.

    No modifiers here
    ————————-
The lead designer, Jay Wilson, has stated that Skill Runes will not have any attribute bonuses or other modifiers attached to them, and will only function to change the behavior of the skill itself. This is to keep players from choosing a rune based on its modifiers alone, and be stuck with a skill effect he or she doesn’t particularly care for.

    What the future holds
    ————————-
Runes have the ability to completely change how a skill will function. It will add a new layer of strategy, diversity, and style to how you will play your character. The different types of creative effects that can be achieved by Skill Runes are truly vast and only limited by what the development team can come up with. However, knowing Blizzard, I can confidently say that we will all be pleasantly surprised come Diablo 3′s release.

  17. In 1996, the original Diablo showed up on store shelves. It was a dark game, killing demons with your hero. Your hero could find items and equip them to improve your avatar (the character you played.) In 2000, a sequel to Diablo was released, named Diablo 2. Diablo 2 improved upon its original with new ground breaking graphics, and more heroes to choose from to defeat your foe. The next year, an expansion for Diablo 2 was distributed around the world called Lord of Destruction. It added a new act to the previous 4 in Diablo 2.

In Act 5 you fought the demon named Baal. Once Baal was defeated, you moved on to the next difficulty. Difficulty levels in the Diablo Series range from Normal, the easiest of the three, Nightmare, more difficult than Normal, and finally, Hell, the hardest of them all. Once you defeated all the acts in Normal mode, you moved onto Nightmare, and then onto Hell. Once Baal was defeated, Tyrael, an archangel, destroyed the World Stone, and left it open to the next game in the series.

Diablo 3, the next game in the series, takes place years after the destruction of the world stone. Many of your previous heroes have turned evil, but one has managed to remain good, the Barbarian. With the barbarian, two other classes have been announced for Diablo 3, named the Witch Doctor and the Wizard. They will fight side by side to destroy the evil that resides in Diablo 3. When you first start up the game, you’ll have to choose between the heroes, and pick the one you want to play as.

Characters will start at level 1, and gain experience when slaying monsters. As you level up, you acquire skill points. Skill points are used to grant the character special abilities, such as a new attack skill. You also gain stat points, which increase the health of your hero, strength & dexterity, used to equip more powerful items. While blizzard has not yet confirmed a maximum level for Diablo 3, Diablo 2 has a maximum level of 99.

Diablo 3 will definitely improve upon the series with enhanced graphics, a physics engine called Havok, and 4 new heroes to play as, and an old time favorite, the Barbarian.

  18. Diablo III is shaping up to be a great addition to what is already an incredible series, and one that is arguably Blizzard’s most popular. The game will be very different from how many people remember it’s previous incarnation, Diablo II, and some of those changes are very promising. In specific I want to go into detail on the new Rune System, which is vastly altered from what it was in Diablo II. It’s looking like the most exciting change from the previous games, and will give Diablo III a level of customization unseen in previous games, and easily on par with a game like World of Warcraft.

In Diablo II, players will remember runes as rare dropped items that were able to be socketed into armor and weapons to give added bonuses, and the right combination could provide a Rune Word bonus that gave an item an entirely new set of stats, making it incredibly powerful. In Diablo III, this is completely changed, because while runes will still be items, they will be more similar to the glyphs in World of Warcraft. For those unfamiliar, these are items which can change the functionality of spells and abilities the player has. In Diablo III, the Witch Doctor has a spell called Flame Skull, which causes the player to throw a skull made of fire that explodes on impact. By socketing the Flame Skull ability with say, the Multi-Strike rune, the skull will bounce once, exploding, and then explode upon it’s second impact. There are other examples but that was my favorite, because it completely changes the power of the spell, allowing it to reach much farther and cover more area with damage than without the Multi-Strike rune.

Another of the examples the developers used last Blizzcon was very interesting, and that was the Wizard’s Teleport ability. Most players know this as a great way for travel, being able to cover tremendous distance in a very short time. But what happens when you socket Teleport with the Lethality or Multi-Strike rune? Simple: Teleport becomes an offensive ability! Suddenly, just by teleporting into a group of enemies, you cause them to take damage, making for a very customizable gameplay style. Diablo II had set builds that were accepted as the best at what they did, but in Diablo III, players will have far more choices than before, allowing them to change the way their abilities work entirely.

We haven’t yet seen all the rune ideas that the developers at Blizzard have created, and I’m sure they’re hard at work devising new ones, but suffice it to say, they will add a depth of gameplay that simply wasn’t present in Diablo II or it’s expansion. Player versus Player combat will become a wildcard, as you won’t know if you’re facing someone with a self-healing rune, or a lethality rune. Maybe their magic missile stuns you for half a second or slows your movement? There are tons of possibilities, and I absolutely cant wait to try them.
