A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The City of the Damned
A Diablo II Story by Heather Crnkovich
Shortly after I began playing Diablo 2, a friend of mine and I were plodding through the Plains of Despair admiring the bleak landscape and delicate features of the gothic ruins. “Look how nicely those skulls are piled there.” The occasional Maw Fiend and Doom Caster were quickly vanquished and many a trapped soul was kicked (er… released). All in all this was just a normal run for his Barbarian and my Sorceress. We had no idea that events were unfolding to cause this particular game to live in infamy. A day simply now known to us as “When we lost the Yari”.
Weeks earlier, Andariel had dropped the Unique Hone Sundan Yari which was the perfect addition to my Barbarian friend’s arsenal; It quickly became his favorite weapon. “Poke, poke poke.” His damage inducing pierces coupled with my Cold Spells made us a team to be reckoned with. We championed our way across Sanctuary making Deckard Cain proud. But our overconfidence got the best of us on that fateful day. Several Champion Venom Lords rushed us at once. We tried to back off in order to separate them but they were too closely grouped together. I snowed, iced and surrounded them with hydras but it wasn’t enough. Amidst the chaos, the Barbarian fell.
After retrieving his body, however, my friend noticed something was wrong. The Yari was missing; only empty squares on either side of his inventory remained. We looked on the ground, in the Pandemonium Fortress, checked the Rouge Encampment, even logged off and back on; nothing. Some random game glitch had eaten the Hone Sundan.
As a gamer random glitches are a part of life especially when the game you are playing is a bona fide antique like Diablo 2. Many glitches have become more like Easter Eggs in the Diablo world such as invisibility and trading errors and now we can add a new one to the list. If you are standing in the Plains of Despair while fighting a Champion Venom Lord in a blizzard you stand a good chance of permanently losing your Unique Weapon if you are killed.
Two years later the Barbarian has gone on to slay his foe with many other weapons since the Yari but it has become a constant quest to find another Hone Sundan. Frankly, it has become so built up in our minds as the perfect weapon that finding it again would probably just lead to it being immediately sold leaving us to wonder what all the fuss was about.
